What 85 million installs taught us about mobile retention
Installs are vanity, retention is survival. Lessons from shipping 36+ consumer apps on what keeps people coming back on day 1, day 7 and day 30.

Our founding team has shipped more than thirty-six apps that together crossed eighty-five million installs. The number people ask about is the installs. The number that determined which apps survived was always retention.
The first sixty seconds decide day 1
Users decide whether an app is worth keeping before they finish onboarding. Cold start under a second, value visible on the first screen, permissions requested only when their purpose is obvious. Every extra tap before the aha moment costs measurable retention.
Day 7 is about habit, not features
The apps that held day-7 retention gave people a reason to return that was tied to their life, not our roadmap. A useful notification, a streak, a saved state that made returning easier than starting again. Adding features rarely moved day 7; removing friction always did.
Day 30 is about trust
- Crash-free sessions above 99.5%. Every crash is a churn event.
- Respectful monetisation: paywalls that show value before asking for money.
- Fast, honest support. People forgive bugs; they do not forgive silence.
- Regular, visible improvement. Changelogs matter more than you think.
Where AI changes the equation
Language models let apps adapt to each user: personalised onboarding, smarter defaults, assistance in the moment of confusion. The retention gains are real, but only when the intelligence is fast and invisible. Nobody stays for a chatbot; they stay because the product quietly got them what they wanted.
