What really drives app development cost (and how to control it)
Why two app quotes can differ ten times over. The real cost drivers in app and AI projects, and practical ways founders keep budgets under control.

Founders often get quotes for the "same" app that differ by ten times. Usually nobody is lying; they are pricing different products. Understanding what actually drives cost is the best way to compare quotes and protect your budget.
1. Scope, not screens
Screen count is a poor proxy. Cost follows the number of distinct workflows, business rules and edge cases. A five-screen app with payments, refunds and role-based access can cost more than a twenty-screen content app.
2. Platforms and devices
Android plus iOS plus web roughly multiplies front-end effort unless you use a shared codebase. Cross-platform frameworks reduce this for most products; device-heavy features like camera pipelines or AR push you toward native.
3. Integrations
Every external system, such as payment gateways, ERPs, CRMs, logistics APIs or government services, adds design, testing and failure handling. Integrations are where estimates most often go wrong.
4. AI features
Calling a model is easy; making it reliable is the work. Retrieval pipelines, evaluation suites, guardrails and cost controls are what turn a demo into a product, and they also determine your monthly model bill.
5. Quality bar
- Automated tests and CI/CD.
- Accessibility and localisation.
- Performance on low-end devices.
- Security reviews and compliance requirements.
- Analytics and monitoring from launch.
How to control the budget
- Start with a short discovery phase to remove unknowns before committing to a build.
- Launch the core loop first; put everything else on a later roadmap.
- Prefer proven services (auth, payments, analytics) over custom builds.
- Ask every vendor what is excluded, not just what is included.
- Insist on owning your code, cloud accounts and designs from day one.
If you want a realistic picture for your idea, our project planner gives an indicative timeline in a minute, and a discovery call turns it into a written proposal.
